Strengthening clinical trials across Africa

From September to November 2025, the Africa Regulatory Conference presents a four-part webinar series on strengthening the clinical trial ecosystem in Africa. Building  upon the WHO Global Action Plan for Clinical Trial Ecosystem Strengthening, the series convenes patients, communities, regulators, researchers, ethics bodies, civil society, and industry leaders to explore four core action areas where multi-stakeholder collaboration can drive progress for a more inclusive, innovative, and efficient clinical research environment.

Key focus areas

Patient and community engagement: Empowering patients and communities to actively participate in the clinical trial process through inclusive engagement, trust-building, and co-creation of research priorities.

Inclusion of under-represented populations: Addressing barriers that limit participation of marginalized groups—such as children, pregnant women, the elderly, and rural populations—to ensure trials generate relevant, equitable evidence.

Innovation in clinical trial design and technology: Promoting the adoption of innovative and fit-for-purpose trial methods—like decentralized and adaptive designs—along with digital tools that enhance trial efficiency and reach.

Streamlined regulatory and ethics oversight: Advancing coordination, harmonization, and reliance mechanisms to accelerate ethical and regulatory approvals without compromising quality or safety.

Regional collaboration and capacity strengthening: Strengthening clinical trial networks, National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs), and ethics committees through regional cooperation, training, and institutional investment to drive sustainable progress.
